“As the terrible events were still unfolding, our teams went into action in an incredibly fluid and devastating situation. While no journalist wants to cover a tragedy like this, the coverage was a testament to the important role we play as journalists to inform and explain, even in the most difficult and tragic situations.”
On September 4, 2022, 11 people, ages 23 to 78, were killed and 18 injured when Myles Sanderson shot himself in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. The hunt for Sanderson, identified by the RCMP as the sole perpetrator of the stabbings, continued until September 7, when he died shortly after being taken into police custody.
In the 36 hours after the RCMP’s first dangerous person alert, StarPhoenix and Leader-Post staff updated two live files more than 200 times. In addition, journalists and editors presented five more news stories, plus a multitude of photographs, during these first 36 hours.
