Artificial intelligence is here to rescue people who may have desirable traits, but aren’t necessarily adept at displaying their most attractive qualities in the fickle world of online dating.
In fact, those looking for romance and personal connections through dating apps go through hundreds of profiles at once, which means those first impressions can matter even more. Thus, a new crop of AI-powered apps has emerged to help love-seekers catch the eye of potential clients.
For example, apps like Rizz i Keys are AI-powered texting coaches designed to act as a digital wingman. While a simple “Hello” may be an acceptable way to approach someone you’re attracted to in person, this type of online greeting is unlikely to elicit a response.
Rizz allows users to upload a photo or screenshot of an online dating chat or bio and immediately generates opening lines. Users can even ask apps like Rizz to make their answers funnier, wittier, or more romantic.
“It’s mostly affecting users for content creation and chat boxes,” psychologist and dating coach Holly Battey told CBS News. “Essentially, it’s helping users create content, it’s suggesting conversation starters.”
“Generative” AI technology. like ChatGPT it has already infiltrated other parts of our lives and has proven to be potentially useful in eliminating, or at least reducing, time spent on monotonous and repetitive tasks. And it turns out it has useful applications in the age of online dating.
Of course, once the dates get out from behind their screens, they need to be able to hold their own in person. Just as a person’s photo can make them seem more attractive than they really are, someone whose brilliant AI-generated conversation could also disappoint.
“They’re going to feel that emptiness, like when online photos fake us,” Battey said.
“I think people have to be prepared for that,” he added.
But for people who struggle with the conversational puzzle, AI could be a powerful tool to help them overcome an obstacle that has kept them coming back to online dating. For example, sometimes a “personality doesn’t translate into writing, and so they can have a deficit,” Battey noted.
“Some people really need help getting out the door. They don’t know what to write on their dating profile, they don’t know how to start a conversation over text or messaging, so they need a tool like this to get them there. start,” he said.
