Rachael Rollins is resigning as U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts following the release of two scathing reports detailing a series of ethical failures during her year and a half in office. Most notably, the US Department of Justice’s inspector general and the Office of Special Counsel found that Rollins tried to influence the election in which voters chose his successor as Suffolk County district attorney. According to federal investigators, Rollins gave the press damaging details about a candidate, then-acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Hayden, including sensitive DOJ information; acted as a political advisor to the other candidate, Boston City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo; and lied under oath about what he had done.
Rollins’ resignation appears to rule out any further sanctions from the government. But the potential consequences for his political allies, and others who share his progressive approach to law enforcement, are only beginning to emerge.
