Two Saratoga County Sheriff’s deputies were shot Tuesday morning in Clifton Park. It happened around 5:30 a.m. while he was helping the DEA execute an arrest warrant.

Deputies returned fire and shot the suspect, Anthony Zaremski. He died at Albany Medical Center around 9:15 am

Deputies were part of a law enforcement team that arrived at 312 Foxwood Dr. and identified themselves. That’s when Zaremski started shooting them.

Sheriff Michael Zurlo said at an afternoon press conference that one of the deputies was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the thigh. His prognosis is excellent, the sheriff said.

The other deputy was shot in the chest, but had body armor protecting him. He has already been discharged from the hospital.

“The quick thinking and instant actions by the members of the Special Operations Team and the provision of first aid to the injured officers, including the application of two tourniquets to the deputy with a shot to the thigh, did not be more than heroic,” Zurlo said.

This is the first time in the history of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office that two members have been shot, Zurlo said.

EDITOR’S NOTE: NewsChannel 13 previously identified the deputies who were injured, but after Sheriff Michael Zurlo asked us to remove their names from our stories out of concern for their safety, we agreed. “As a matter of operational security, I have chosen not to release the names or identities of the deputies involved in this morning’s shooting incident,” the sheriff wrote in a statement. “I understand that some media outlets may have learned the MPs’ names through their sources, and I respectfully ask that they not publish them at this time.”
