Donald Trump has appeared in court via video for a second hearing since becoming the first US president in US history to be arrested and charged with a crime.
The former president was on screen in Manhattan Criminal Court so Judge Juan Merchan could make sure he understood the terms of the protective order in the case.
The judge imposed the order after Mr. Trump targeted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Judge Merchan himself on social media when he was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records while making payments from hush money to cover up alleged affairs with women.
A trial date has been set for March 25, 2024, in the middle of the Republican primaries.
Mr. Trump’s other legal troubles are also heating up. On Monday, author E Jean Carroll amended her defamation lawsuit against Trump to include the disparaging comment he made about her at a CNN town hall after he was found liable for sexually assaulting and defaming Ms. Carroll in a jury trial in New York.
The former president responded by defaming her again on Truth Social.

Trump “threw his hands up in frustration” at the trial date
Donald Trump threw up his hands in frustration Tuesday as a judge scheduled his criminal trial for March 25, putting the former president and current candidate in a Manhattan courtroom in the midst of next year’s presidential primary season.
Trump, who appeared via video conference at a pretrial hearing in the hush money case, looked into the camera as New York Judge Juan Manuel Merchan advised him to cancel all other obligations pending the trial, which it could last several weeks.
Trump, wearing a blue suit against a backdrop of American flags at his Florida estate, then addressed a lawyer at his side (their brief argument was inaudible on the video feed) before taking his seat arms crossed for the rest of the hearing.

The former president believes his First Amendment rights have been violated and calls the timing of the start of his trial — March 25, 2024, in the middle of the primary season — “election interference.”
I just had a hearing in the New York County Supreme Court where I believe my first amendment rights, “Freedom of Speech” have been violated and we were forced to have a trial date of March 25th, right in the middle of the Primary season. Someone who won’t run for president? Tucker Carlson
Tucker Carlson’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to a super PAC urging the former Fox News host to run for president.
“Mr. Carlson will not run for president in 2024 under any circumstances and therefore your misrepresentations harm Mr. Carlson and his supporters,” the letter, sent Monday and obtained by The Hill. reads.
“If he does not immediately cease and desist his efforts to solicit money to ‘draft’ Mr. Carlson, we will use all legal means at our disposal to vindicate his rights and protect his supporters from these misrepresentations.”
