PetSmart Charities Funds UC Davis Faculty Chair
The University of California, Davis College of Veterinary Medicine will use a $6 million gift to establish the PetSmart Charities Endowed Chair in Accessible Veterinary Care. The endowed faculty chair has not been filled, but a call for applications is expected in a few weeks, according to UC Davis. “It’s one of the most pressing issues of our time: building more equitable access to veterinary care,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “Supporting an endowed faculty chair from this world-class veterinary school will help us gain access to knowledge and expertise to effectively invest in this critical societal need.”
Thrive Pet Healthcare Appoints CEO
400-hospital network Thrive Pet Healthcare hired Tad Stahel to replace Odis Pirtle as CEO, effective June 12. Stahel’s most recent job was group vice president at DaVita, a provider of kidney care services in human medicine. One of Austin, Texas-based Thrive’s goals is to grow the company to 1,000 locations in the United States.
CityVet appoints Chief Strategy Officer
CityVet, a Dallas-based network of 28 veterinary practices, hired Jennifer Welser, DVM, DACVO, as chief strategy officer. “His strategic plan will include the introduction and awareness of CityVet’s unique veterinary ownership model and support system in new industry channels,” the company reported.
AVMA selects 2023-2024 DC Fellow
Massachusetts Veterinarian Dr. Mariah Lancaster will participate in the 2023-2024 American Veterinary Medical Association Fellowship Program. She will serve as a full-time scientific advisor to a congressional office or committee. “Using his veterinary experience, he will work with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to shape and influence legislation on a variety of policy issues,” the AVMA said.
WSAVA to start the professional development program
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association is launching an online certificate program in professional development and personal wellness. The course will “help students create a professional development roadmap and develop strategies to safeguard their well-being,” according to WSAVA. “It will be available later this year, free of charge to members of WSAVA member associations, made possible by the support of Hill’s Pet Nutrition.”

Summit Veterinary Advisors has marked 25 years in business. Leslie Mamalis, a consultant and columnist for Today’s Veterinary Business, acquired Weatherford, Texas-based Summit in 2014. The company is currently owned by Tera Eddleman, CVA.
