ARLINGTON, Mass – Arlington police are investigating a crash in which several pedestrians were hit by a vehicle in the Stop & Shop parking lot
According to Arlington Police Chief Julie Flaherty, officers responded to an accident at the Stop and Shop located at 905 Massachusetts Ave around 10:16 am.
Upon arrival, officers found several injured people in the parking lot, and Arlington police and firefighters began administering emergency medical care.
The initial investigation shows that a 2005 Mercury Marquis driven by an 87-year-old Belmont man was entering the Stop and Shop parking lot when it struck an occupied parked vehicle and an exterior wall of the building. The man then backed up and struck several pedestrians.
Two pedestrians, a 61-year-old Arlington woman and a 70-year-old Randolph man were taken to area hospitals. The driver of the Mercury was treated at the scene and taken to an area hospital.
The owner of the parked vehicle, a woman from Harwich, was not injured.
According to police, access to the parking lot will likely be disrupted for much of the afternoon.
The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CARS) also responded to the scene to assist Arlington Police.
The Arlington Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
