Kam Throckmorton admits the gap between Democrats and Republicans is wide, but he believes there are ways for both parties to bridge the gap.
He is trying to organize a meeting to attract what he hopes will be a diverse group of people to attend an organizational meeting of a local Braver Angels chapter.
The national organization was created to unite conservative, liberal and independent Americans in a working alliance to bring respectful conversations to the nation.
Throckmorton said his motivation for holding an informational meeting was the community’s reaction to an incident in which a 19-year-old man, Trent Lehrkamp, appeared on social media earlier this year drunk and covered in paint, surrounded by a group of teenagers. He was hospitalized with an alcoholemia considered toxic.
There was a lot of blame before all the facts were known to investigators.
“I hated how our community responded,” he said.
The informational meeting will be held at 6 pm on June 15 at Christ Church Episcopal, 6329 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island.
The meeting has been in the planning stages for several months, and Throckmorton said he expects a good turnout.
The goal is to show both parties that they have much more in common than they are different.
“The people I’ve talked to are pretty excited,” he said. “I think we all have a lot in common. I think our goals are very well aligned.”
