FRISCO – “Talking” is not “doing.” But as the Dallas Cowboys face contract negotiations with several of their top stars, the ball has been rolling on wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, as CowboysSI.com was first to report on April 16. And now the same can be said, according to an NFL source, about talks with Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.
There is an arguable priority for Diggs as he heads into the final year of his rookie contract in 2023. In 2021, Diggs led all cornerbacks with 11 interceptions en route to an All-Pro selection of the first team The 24-year-old is regarded as one of the best players in his position and, of course, wants to be paid that way. He could end up receiving the franchise tag in 2024, or the Cowboys could work preemptively here.
Will Dallas see contact with the star cornerback, who could make his case to eclipse Green Bay Packers standout Jaire Alexander ($21 million per year) as the highest-paid player at the position? The only way to find out is to start the conversation.
The 2024 franchise tag on the cornerback figures to be around $20 million, meaning it may actually be more affordable, cap-wise, to create a long-term deal. Extensions are planned for Lamb (which will increase cap impact) and Dak Prescott (intended to reduce cap impact). … and they’re all doable this offseason, especially now that Dallas can start fresh with more than $20 million in cap space.
PFF has a contract projection here of four years and $81 million ($20.25 million annually) with a total of $57.5 million guaranteed. Except for the current $20 million APY rate, which seems out of the question, we don’t know if these talks will get the two sides there or when it will happen.
Diggs, meanwhile, has made it clear that he wants to be a “Cowboy for Life,” saying recently, “Hopefully something gets worked out. I love Dallas. I love being here. We’ll see.”
