Ukrainian troops witnessed Russian soldiers being swept away by floodwaters after the Nova Khakovka dam burst, a military official in the Ukrainian armed forces said, adding that many Russian troops were killed or be injured as a result of the collapse of the dam.
Many Russian soldiers were also seen fleeing the east bank of the Dnipro River, Capt. Andrei Pidlisnyi told CNN.
“No one on the Russian side was able to escape. All the regiments that the Russians had on that side were flooded,” the armed forces official told CNN.
It is likely that Russia deliberately attacked the dam to interfere with Ukraine’s plans for the next offensive, he said.
Nearly 42,000 people remain at risk of flooding in Russian- and Ukrainian-controlled areas along the Dnipro River after the collapse of the Soviet-era Nova Kakhovka Dam, the UN aid chief warned United on “serious and far-reaching consequences”.
Ukrainian officials estimated that some 42,000 people were at risk from the floods, which are expected to peak today.

Russian soldiers were swept away by the floodwaters, a Ukrainian official says
A Ukrainian armed forces military officer said Ukrainian troops witnessed Russian soldiers being swept away by floodwaters after the Nova Khakovka dam burst. Many Russian soldiers were also seen fleeing the east bank of the Dnipro River, Capt. Andrei Pidlisnyi told CNN.
The official said many Russian troops were killed or injured as a result of the dam collapse.
“No one on the Russian side was able to escape. All the regiments that the Russians had on that side were flooded,” the armed forces official told CNN.
It is likely that Russia deliberately attacked the dam to interfere with Ukraine’s plans for the next offensive, he said.
The Russians blew up the hydroelectric plant to “raise the water level to flood the approaches and the left bank of the Dnipro River, as well as the settlements located there,” he said.
This was also done to make it “impossible” for Ukrainian armed forces to advance into the region in the future, the official said.

Russian forces are shelling Ukraine’s Kherson region and one person has been killed, according to the governor
Russian forces shelled Ukraine’s Kherson region several times in the past day, the region’s governor said, with one person killed and another injured as a result of the attacks.
The shelling included the city of Kherson, the Ukrainian governor of the region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on the Telegram messaging app.
Reuters could not independently verify the report. There were no further details of Prokudin.
On Tuesday, the critical Nova Kakhovka dam in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson was destroyed, flooding large areas of Kherson and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

Water level in Kakhovka reservoir reached record high before collapse, UK MoD says
The structure of the Nova Kakhovka dam is likely to deteriorate further over the coming days, causing further flooding, Britain’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) said.
“The Russian-controlled Kakhovka Dam partially failed shortly before 03:00 local time on June 6, 2023. By 12:00, the entire eastern part of the dam and much of the hydraulic and utility infrastructure were swept away,” the ministry said in its latest intelligence update. .
He added that the water level in the Kakhovka reservoir was at a record level before the collapse, which caused a particularly high volume of water to flood the downstream area.
“The Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is located 120 km from the dam, is very unlikely to face additional immediate safety problems as a result of falling water levels in the reservoir,” he said the Ministry of Defense.

Ukraine will open hearings against Russia at the UN High Court
Hearings begin Tuesday at the United Nations’ top court in a case brought by Ukraine against Russia related to Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the arming of rebels in eastern Ukraine in the years before full-scale invasion of Russia in February 2022.
Kiev wants the International Court of Justice to order Moscow to pay reparations for attacks in the regions, including the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 that was shot down by Russian-backed rebels on July 17, 2014, killing the 298 passengers and crew.
Four days of hearings in the court’s ornate, wood-paneled Great Hall of Justice open against the backdrop of Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II spreading into Ukraine. Ukraine accused Russian forces on Tuesday of blowing up a large dam and hydroelectric plant in a part of the country controlled by Moscow, threatening massive flooding.

Russia probably plans to blow up nuclear power plant, says Kiev
Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of planning to blow up the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after destroying the Nova Kakhovka dam.
“The whole world” should be concerned about how reckless Moscow could be, said Oleksiy Danilov, President Zelensky’s top security official, who called the destruction of the hydroelectric plant “a fundamentally new stage of Russian aggression “.
“It is a fact that there are explosives [at the occupied Zaporizhzhia plant] . . . since Putin blew up the hydroelectric plant at his demand, he is ready to do anything,” Danilov told The Times after an emergency meeting of Ukraine’s national security council.
Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior aide to Zelensky, added that “the world is once again on the brink of a nuclear disaster because the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant lost its cooling source” due to the destruction of the dam.
The Nova Kakhovka Dam reservoir pumped water into the plant to cool the reactors, which have remained offline since the attack but still require constant cooling.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, under Russian control since the start of the full-scale invasion in February last year, is 90 miles upriver from the dam. It is the largest nuclear installation in Europe.

Satellite images show heavy flooding as the Nova Kakhovka Dam was largely destroyed
Heavy flooding in southern Ukraine with the region’s Nova Kahkovka dam and hydroelectric power station largely destroyed has been captured in satellite images taken yesterday afternoon by Maxar Technologies.
The critical dam, which sits along the Dnipro River in the parts of Ukraine’s Kherson region currently occupied by Russia, collapsed on Tuesday, flooding part of the war zone along the front line.
Maxar said images of more than 2,500 square kilometers (965 square miles) between Nova Kakhovka and the Dniprovska Gulf southwest of the Black Sea city of Kherson showed numerous towns and villages flooded.
“The Nova Kakhovka dam and hydroelectric power station have been largely destroyed and few structures remain,” Maxar said in a statement.

Some 42,000 at risk as floods sweep Kherson a day after dam collapse
Nearly 42,000 people remain at risk of flooding in Russian- and Ukrainian-controlled areas along the Dnipro River after the collapse of the Soviet-era Nova Kakhovka Dam, the UN aid chief warned United on “serious and far-reaching consequences”.
Ukrainian officials estimated that some 42,000 people were at risk from the floods, which are expected to peak today.
The dam breach “will have serious and far-reaching consequences for thousands of people in southern Ukraine on both sides of the frontline due to the loss of housing, food, drinking water and livelihoods,” UN aid chief Martin Griffiths told the Security Council. .
Both nations have blamed each other for yesterday’s massive dam collapse, which sent floods into part of the war zone and forced thousands to flee.

Russian court sets date for retrial of jailed Kremlin foe Navalny
A Moscow court on Tuesday set the date for a retrial of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which could keep him behind bars for decades.
