MATTAPAN, Mass. – About two dozen people living in a three-story house in Mattapan are displaced, while three residents and two firefighters were hospitalized, after a “hot and fast” fire tore through the structure Sunday, according to Boston fire officials. .

Police arrived at 571 Cummins Highway Sunday afternoon to find the back of the building engulfed in flames, sending black smoke billowing through the neighborhood.

All residents of the building were out of the building when firefighters arrived on the scene. Crews battled the intense flames for 30 minutes before bringing the fire under control. The back of the building was blackened, with charred wood the only remains of three back porches.

Although they believe the fire started on one of the three back porches, firefighters do not yet know the exact cause of the fire.

Three neighbors and two firefighters were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

The building is not habitable at the moment and the Red Cross is helping the residents.
