SARANAC LAKE – The Adirondack Daily Enterprise was honored with two awards at the New York News Publishers Association’s 2022 Awards of Excellence, which were announced Tuesday.
Company Managing Editor Elizabeth Izzo won an award for Distinguished Editorial Writing in the circulation class of less than 10,000 people. Business staff writer Aaron Marbone was honored for distinguished coverage of breaking news.

Izzo, who became editor-in-chief in 2021 and has been with the Enterprise since 2019, won Distinguished Editorial Writing for four publishers. The first, titled “It’s time to address the elephant in the room,” was published on March 7, 2022, and encouraged Lake Placid’s elected officials to improve communication and try to mend relationships with residents who felt alienated. “I hope you find yourself in a sad state of affairs,” posted on September 1, 2022 opined on the affordable housing crisis and Lake Placid’s first housing lottery. The editorial of July 23, 2022 “Will anything change with Ironman?” encouraged elected officials and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism to take a look at their contract with the triathlon and consider whether Lake Placid is getting enough in return for hosting the event. The latest editorial, published on November 5, 2022, asked the question: “Should Glenview Preserve have public access?” The answer: “Whatever the Adirondack Land Trust decides to do with the property, we expect the Glenview Preserve to remain largely undisturbed.” says the editor.
“In her editorials, Adirondack Daily Enterprise Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth Izzo directly addresses the thorny question of whether tourism growth is really benefiting Lake Placid residents.” wrote the category judge. “She effectively poses the question: Will the village become an overpriced tourist town where most year-round residents struggle to survive? Her points are clear and persuasive and she offers intelligent and workable suggested remedies.”

Marbone, an Enterprise staff writer since 2017, won Distinguished Breaking News Coverage for his story titled “Waterline break displaces Donald E. Smith residents”, published on December 28, 2022 In the story, Marbone reports a sprinkler line break at the Tupper Lake apartment complex displaced 48 residents and sparked a large community response to help those residents
“This story examines what happens when a plumbing malfunction adversely affects a significant group of vulnerable people and how a community immediately comes together to help.” wrote the category judge. “Lots of detail and good quotes from lots of people make this a strong report.”

Judges for the New York Association of News Editors Awards competition selected the winners from 435 entries submitted by 29 New York State newspapers.
The NYNPA awards announced Tuesday follow four awards presented at the New York Press Association’s Enterprise in April.
Marbone also won an NYPA award for breaking news coverage for his article “Waterline break displaces Donald E. Smith residents”, along with a first prize in the sports reporting category for a story about a 10-year-old Petrova Elementary School student attending the 2022 Parasport National Championships in Lake Placid.
The firm also won the NYPA’s Innovative Design Project and Special Sections awards.
