Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis traveled to Sacramento on Monday for a private breakfast at the Del Paso Country Club to raise money for his GOP presidential campaign. Rep. Joe Patterson, R-Rocklin, who attended the event, said about 50-60 people, mostly business leaders from the region, joined the $3,300-a-person fundraiser . “He had a lot of energy, just the room in general was very energetic,” Patterson said. “He’s taller than I expected, he’s got presence, he’s definitely presidential. He’s up for the challenge.” Both were invited by the DeSantis campaign. DeSantis discussed Florida vs. California during the COVID-19 pandemic, stressed the importance of parents’ rights and keeping schools open. DeSantis also took questions from the audience, Patterson said. Paterson said he is interested in supporting DeSantis for president. He said he has lost many residents in his district to Florida and joked with DeSantis to stop stealing from his constituents. “He’s not too much older than me, just by a couple of years. He’s got young kids like me, who resonate with me because this is the next generation of Republican leaders,” Patterson said. Patterson confirmed that Gov. Gavin Newsom was raised at the breakfast. “He talked about how Gavin Newsom can’t stop talking about him,” Patterson said. “It’s ridiculous, I wish the governor of California would spend more time talking about California and not Florida.” Just as the event began, Newsom’s campaign sent out an email to potential donors, which read in part: “The reason Republicans like Ron DeSantis are fanning the flames of the culture wars is to distract the attention to the fact that Florida has higher murder rates, worse education and worse health care outcomes than states like California.” DeSantis avoided reporters who spent the morning standing across the street from the country club’s front door. DeSantis and a motorcade used the club’s side service entrance to get in and out. Around 10:20 a.m., a KCRA 3 crew on scene captured video of DeSantis’ motorcade leaving the event. A flyer for the “roundtable breakfast” said real estate developer Steven Eggert and his wife, Pamela, hosted the fundraiser. Neither Eggert nor the DeSantis campaign responded to KCRA 3’s request for comment. A recent Berkeley IGS poll shows DeSantis trailing former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary in California, with 44% of likely Republican voters who said they would vote for Trump and 26% who said they would choose DeSantis. DeSantis’ stop in Sacramento is his first in California since he and his administration in Florida admitted their involvement in transporting 36 migrants from the southern Texas border and dropping them off, unannounced, in Sacramento. Civil actions may be brought against DeSantis, his administration and the private contractors hired to bring the migrants from one state to another. KCRA 3 has repeatedly asked Bonta’s office if he intended to contact DeSantis as part of this investigation, but he had not yet responded as of Monday afternoon. KCRA 3 saw police vehicles with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department inside the country club parking lot. Sources said the officers were there to help with security. Patterson said he saw “nothing out of the ordinary” about someone being under a possible criminal investigation. Still no sign of DeSantis from the front door.
We saw this person, who was carrying camera equipment, get dropped off at a rideshare service. His driver said he wanted to jump the fence because he didn’t think they would let him pass in front.
He was allowed in, unlike the rest of us. pic.twitter.com/7fmbOOidft
