The censure resolution targeted Schiff’s involvement in the investigation of former President Donald Trump
The measure was approved along party lines on Wednesday
Of the eight laws sponsored de Luna, who was endorsed by Trump and was one of the first members of Congress to endorse him as he runs again for the White House, five have been directed at Schiff. His resolution to censure the deputy for his involvement in the investigation of former President Donald Trump passed along party lines.
“There’s a lot of support in the Republican Conference for this,” Luna said in an interview with Spectrum News. “And I think this is one of many to come, but hopefully it sets the precedent that you can’t exploit, abuse your position of power to hurt people.”
Schiff is a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. On the House floor, Luna criticized Schiff for seeking out and leading investigations into allegations that Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with Russia, investigations that she said cost taxpayers $32 million.
Special counsel Robert Mueller concluded that Russia interfered in that election, but said he found no evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
“As Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff launched an all-out political campaign based on baseless distortions against a sitting President of the United States at the expense of all citizens of this country and the honor of the House of Representatives,” Luna said. on the floor of the house.
Schiff denounced the vote as political and, with Trump facing multiple investigations and criminal charges, noted the timing.
“Donald Trump is accused of actions that endanger our national security, and McCarthy would waste the nation’s time on a little political payback, thinking he can censure or fine Trump’s opposition to run,” Schiff said. “But I won’t give in, not one inch.”
Luna was endorsed by Trump in his bid for the White House, and was one of the first members of Congress to endorse the former president as he runs for the White House again.
“Votes of no confidence or votes of oversight are becoming a growing norm for building a brand, basically planting your flag in the ground and saying, ‘I’m the one, look at my resolution that makes the other party be responsible that way,” said Casey Burgat. with George Washington University.
