Despite his big lead in a crowded Republican primary field, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he doesn’t know if Donald Trump is the “strongest” candidate to take on President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

In an interview with CNBC, McCarthy said that Trump can beat Mr. Biden, but that he is not sure another Republican could not do better. Later in the day, the speaker appeared to walk back the remarks telling Breitbart that the former president is “stronger today than in 2016”.

On Monday night, explosive audio revealed that the former president apparently bragged about still possessing classified military documents on Iran after he left the White House.

In the recording, from a July 2021 meeting at Mr Trump’s Bedminster golf club and released by CNN, the former president can be heard audibly shuffling through documents.

Mr. Trump took to Truth Social to smoke about the tape, criticizing “deranged special counsel” Jack Smith and baselessly accusing the DOJ and FBI of leaking it.

Meanwhile, Trump’s co-defendant in the classified documents case, aide Walt Nauta, has postponed his appearance in Miami after his flight was delayed by bad weather in New Jersey.

You see: Florida man Ron DeSantis has no juice

After the 2022 midterm elections, Florida Governor DeSantis appeared almost bulletproof. As voters on the stump like to say, his nearly 20-point re-election victory served as a bright spot on an otherwise tough election night for Republicans.

But despite kicking off his 2024 presidential campaign in a botched Twitter conversation with SpaceX executive Elon Musk, the former GOP golden boy has failed to launch. His candidacy has been littered with stories of awkward retail politics and losing endorsements to former President Donald Trump. Now there is also evidence that his campaign is on the decline.
