Lord Goldsmith quit the government this morning after accusing Rishi Sunak of being “disinterested” in environmental issues.
The Conservative peer, an ally of Boris Johnson, claimed the government was showing “apathy to the biggest challenge we face”, making his position as climate and environment secretary “untenable”.
In a scathing resignation letter sent to Mr Sunak and posted on Twitter, Lord Goldsmith said: “Prime Minister, having been able to do so much previously, I have struggled to even hold the line in recent months.
“The problem is not that the government is hostile to the environment, it’s that you, our prime minister, are simply not interested.”
Lord Goldsmith accused Sunak of abandoning the Tories’ environmental pledges and argued that “the UK has visibly stepped off the world stage and withdrawn our leadership on climate and nature”.
