Two people are dead after a mass shooting in Baltimore, Maryland, early Sunday morning.

Another 28 people were injured, three of whom are in critical condition in hospital.

Acting Commissioner Richard Worley of the Baltimore Police Department said officers had received numerous calls reporting a shooting at the 800 block of Gretna Court in the Brooklyn Homes area of ​​South Baltimore just after 12:30 p.m.

When the police arrived they located several victims suffering from gunshot wounds, he said at a news conference Sunday morning.

“We located one adult female dead at the scene and nine additional victims were transported from the scene to area hospitals. In addition, we had 20 more victims entering hospitals across the region,” he said.

“Our detectives are currently working an extensive crime scene. The two victims we have are adults. We have three other victims who are listed in critical condition. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims, as well as to the community and to our entire city.”

Witnesses said hundreds of people had gathered overnight for an event dubbed “Brooklyn Day,” according to FOX45 News. Police confirmed there was a Block Party in the area at the time of the shooting.

Investigators could be seen combing the area for evidence and several police cars were parked outside a nearby hospital.

Police have appealed for any eyewitnesses or anyone who knows anything to come forward. They have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, but said they are reviewing video footage and speaking with witnesses to try to identify the suspects.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott was also at the crime scene Sunday morning.

He said: “All of Baltimore is mourning the lives that were lost here and our hearts go out to those still recovering. This investigation is ongoing and our homicide detectives will continue to work until we find out what happened here.

“But what we do know is that this was a recklessly cowardly act that happened here that has permanently altered many lives and cost two people their lives. And I want those responsible to hear me and hear me very clearly. We won’t stop until we find you and we will find you.’
