BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – This week in Louisiana politics, Governor John Bel Edwards pushed through more vetoes, including making changes to the state’s operating budget to fill a cut in the Health Department.
HB1, authored by Jerome Zeringue, R-Houma, provided the appropriate funding for fiscal year 2023-2024. Edwards signed and passed the bill on Thursday, June 29, but decided to veto five parts on the budget cuts.
In addition, the US Supreme Court handed down several decisions that will greatly affect Louisiana, including redistricting orders, LGBTQ discrimination, and student loans.
The Supreme Court blocked the Biden administration’s student debt relief plan on Friday, June 30.
Edwards announced that he vetoed three bills that are considered discriminatory towards the LGBTQ community.
