Turning to media questions, Sir Keir Starmer was asked if he would commit to further investment in schools and the education sector, beyond what Labor has already announced.
He said: “The approach I have taken in this mission and all our missions is to establish the change we need to make and why we need to make it, in this case removing those barriers to opportunity, and where that involves money like this mission does, to explain how much and where it will come from.”
He added: “On the wider question of funding, what I would say is look, a Labor government always takes education seriously. Now you can compare these 13 years with 13 years under a Labor government and you can see the difference “.
He said Labor would set out “more detail” about its funding plans closer to the general election, but the party “cannot hide from the fact that we will inherit a really damaged economy”.
Sir Keir’s comment that “a Labor government always takes education seriously” is likely to be seen as a sign that the party would increase education funding.
