CHICAGO (WLS) — Five people were shot, two dead, on the city’s South Side Sunday evening, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened in the Roseland neighborhood near West 99th Street and South Princeton Avenue. Neighbors told ABC7 a Father’s Day gathering was being held before an altercation broke out and dozens of shots were fired. This meeting is part of a neighborhood event that has been going on for decades.
During a news conference, Chicago police said a car pulled up next to the meeting and someone inside opened fire. Two men, a 37-year-old shot in the head and a 32-year-old shot in the neck, died of their injuries. The 32-year-old victim has been identified as Brian Ross of Chicago.
Another man, a 27-year-old man shot in the buttocks and shoulder, is in critical condition, police said. Two other men, aged 19 and 25, were in normal condition.
All of the gunshot victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and Roseland and Christ hospitals.
A woman, who did not want to be identified on camera, said she heard the gunshots. His relatives were attending the event when they had to fall to the ground after hearing the shot.
Officials did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
