Boy dies, woman seriously injured after north Phoenix apartment fire

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – A child is dead and a woman is in extremely critical condition after an apartment fire early Wednesday afternoon in north Phoenix.

The fire occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m Cyprus apartments on Bell Road near Central Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they could see smoke and flames coming from a unit on the first floor of a three-story building, and additional units were called. Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade said it was a chaotic scene as neighbors tried to get into the burning apartment.

Firefighters say the fire quickly spread to the second and third floors before crews could bring it under control. During the search of the apartment, firefighters found a dead child. A woman from the same floor was rushed to a fire unit with severe burns and smoke inhalation. Investigators say the woman and child are related.

A child died and a woman was seriously injured in a fire Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex in north Phoenix.

A man also suffered cuts trying to get into the burning flat before firefighters arrived. Two firefighters were later taken to a hospital with minor burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Phoenix police officers are also on the scene investigating the death.

Captain McDade says more than a dozen people have been displaced by the fire.
