A 36-year-old Tampa man died Friday when he was driving the wrong way and collided head-on with another vehicle on an Interstate 75 exit ramp, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The other driver, a 49-year-old Riverview man, was seriously injured in the crash that happened just before 10 a.m. on the State Highway 574 exit ramp.
According to officers, the Riverview man was driving a van southbound on I-75 and exited onto SR-574 when the Tampa man took the same northbound exit ramp, at the wrong direction.
The two vehicles collided head-on, officers said. The car the wrong-way motorist was driving caught fire and was partially burned, officers said.
A Hillsborough County fire hazardous incident team was driving to a gas leak when they came across the crash, according to a Facebook post from the agency.
The crew used a fire extinguisher on the car and removed the man. A fire truck arrived shortly after to put out the flames, the post said.
The names of the drivers were not released.
