NEWTON – Newton police are warning people in two city neighborhoods to be “on the lookout” after three elderly people were found stabbed to death in a home over the weekend.
A person who knew the victims called 911 shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday to report that the three people were found dead in the home on Broadway Street. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said there was evidence of forced entry and the victims suffered stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
The three victims have not yet been identified. Ryan said two were a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. No arrests have been made.
“We’re asking people to stay alert,” Ryan said at a news conference Sunday evening. “Close doors and windows even if you normally don’t.”
There was an attempted break-in at a home on Brookside Avenue in Newton, about a half mile from the Broadway home, Sunday morning. It is not known if the two incidents are related.
Police are asking residents in the areas of the Nonantum and Newtonville neighborhoods to check any video from their home and if they see anything unusual to call them.

Ryan also asked residents if they hear or see anything suspicious to call the police immediately. “Don’t wait until the morning to let us know,” Ryan said.
There will be an increased police presence in both neighborhoods until someone is caught.
“You never know what’s going to happen to us,” said a neighbor known to the family, who did not want to go on camera fearing for their safety. That neighbor told WBZ-TV that the three victims are related.
“I knew the whole family. They are very close,” said the neighbor.
According to the united community, the victims were deeply connected to the local church and their absence from the Sunday mass worried the neighbors.
“These were church people. The only reason they found each other is because they weren’t at church and someone came to see if they were OK,” said neighbor Robin Dickey.
A local priest comforted the community Sunday as investigators worked to figure out what happened inside the home.
Newton Police Chief John Carmichael said additional officers and dispatchers have been brought in.
“I’m very concerned that such a violent crime could occur and while this individual, individuals are still at large,” Carmichael said. “We really re-emphasize being vigilant, being vigilant about what’s going on in the neighborhoods.”
