RALEIGH, NC — NC State has landed a commitment from former ECU third baseman Alec Makarewicz. The multi-year starter with the Pirates officially entered the portal on Thursday announced their engagement Monday afternoon that he will join the Wolfpack for the 2024 season.

“Excited to announce that I will be finishing my college baseball career at NC State University! Go Pack!” Makarewicz wrote.

We informed Pack Pride subscribers of the news on Sunday morning before Makarewicz made the news public on Monday.

During his time in Greenville, Makarewicz hit .273/.352/.476 with 28 home runs and 128 RBI in 776 plate appearances over four seasons. He also struck out 161, but his power makes up for the swing-and-miss potential, especially with so many other consistent bats expected to return to the lineup next year and the need for power.

Here’s what Stephen Igoe wrote about Makarewicz’s impact during his time in Greenville:

The Longwood, Fla., native and Lake Brantley High School product has spent the last four years in the Purple and Gold and the last three as the full-time starting third baseman, providing more defense and power. Makarewicz was the only ECU player to start all 66 games during the 2023 season, despite having an up-and-down year at the plate. He finished batting .258 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. His walks increased to 32, but he still struck out 50. In 2022, Makarewicz hit .270 with 11 homers, but struck out 70 times compared to 28 walks. Makarewicz has started every game for East Carolina the last two seasons, a streak of 133 consecutive games.

Makarewicz will have one final season of eligibility at his next stop. He was not selected in last week’s Major League Baseball Draft and is not expected to sign an undrafted contract to turn pro. He projects as a safe third baseman with a powerful bat, but he swings and misses, and chases in his game against quality pitching.

Makarewicz may not be as consistent as Gino Groover III was with the Wolfpack, but he is an elite defensive player who would be more than capable at the hot corner. He can also slide to the outfield if needed, but the need will likely be there at third base.
