Daniel Weinman was crowned the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event on Monday, taking home a record $12.1 million in earnings.
Weinman had to beat out 10,043 other entrants to take home the prize and get his hands on his share of the largest prize pool in live poker history: a whopping $93,399,900.
In addition to taking home the prize money, Weinman, 35, also claimed the WSOP Main Event bracelet. The huge bracelet contains 500 grams of 10-karat yellow gold, as well as 2,352 various gemstones.
“Honestly, I was looking forward to coming back and playing this tournament,” Weinman told reporters after his win.
“I’ve always felt that poker was going in a dying direction, but seeing the numbers at the World Series this year has been incredible,” added the Atlanta native. “And to win this main event, it doesn’t seem real. I mean, [there’s] good luck in a poker tournament. I thought he played really well.”
When asked what he would do with his winnings, Weinman chose to keep his cards close to his chest.
“I have no idea. Probably reverse it. It’s probably not the best answer that everybody wants to hear, but I’m pretty cautious about it away from the table. I like to play hard though,” he told reporters.
“Today will hold a special place in the history of live tournament poker,” World Series of Poker Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Ty Stewart said in a press release following Weinman’s win.
“After 17 years, we have named the biggest Main Event winner in WSOP history. To see Daniel’s emphatic victory over the 10,043 entrants was spectacular. It will be an honor to raise his banner next year and show his image in the new exhibition of the Galeria de Campiones a la ferradura”.
