Based on staff reports

Former Apopka City Commissioner Bill Arrowsmith has withdrawn his name from consideration to rename Harmon Road Bill Arrowsmith Parkway.

On his personal Facebook page, Arrowsmith made the following post:

“Last week, while I was on vacation out west, I was informed that there was an agenda item at the City Commission meeting to change the name of Harmon Road to Bill Arrowsmith Parkway. If someone was trying to surprise me, it worked. I understand that it was a very contentious meeting with the usual slurs fired at me. If that had happened, I would have rejected the move as I would not accept the historic representation.

I served over 39 years as Commissioner/Vice Mayor of this great city and appreciate the gesture, but have asked that it be withdrawn from consideration at this time. I thank those who spoke in favor and apologize for the conduct of the meeting you had to endure. Apopka Proud.”

At the July 19 Apopka City Council meeting, a resolution calling for Harmon Road, which connects Binion Road to Ocoee-Apopka Road and its extension connecting Ocoee-Apopka to Marden Road, be renamed Bill Arrowsmith Parkway.

The Council agreed to table the resolution until the August 16 meeting.

This is breaking news and will be updated in future editions of The Apopka Voice.

Harmon Road,

Bill Arrowsmith Parkway,
