Retro Metro LLC, the owners of the Metrocenter Mall in Jackson, has filed a lawsuit against the city of Jackson to break its lease. According to the lawsuit filed June 21, the city of Jackson leased the Belk Building at Metrocenter Mall on April 4, 2011, for the purpose of maintaining office complexes and other administrative facilities for the city. These offices include the Jackson Police Department’s District Two and the city’s Water Billing Department. Retro Metro LLC is accusing the city of Jackson of failing to pay “consumer price index for urban wages” (CPI-U) rent starting in October 2021. Retro Metro said the rent increased every five years after the initial lease was signed. Retro Metro is asking a Hinds County Chancery Court judge to decide how much the city owes the company. The lawsuit comes weeks before the Jackson city council voted to terminate the city’s lease at the former Belk building in the Metrocenter Mall following complaints from city employees about working conditions. The city council voted on Tuesday. The mayor of Jackson announced Monday that the water billing department inside the Metrocenter mall will be moving in the coming weeks. The building will move to 633 N. State St., the former Mississippi Department of Corrections building.
