Yellen orders IRS not to use new funding to increase chances of audits of Americans earning less than $400,000
The letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig comes amid attacks from Republicans that the $80 billion the Inflation Relief Act would give the IRS over the next 10 years would result in more Americans middle class and small businesses were audited. The Biden administration has repeatedly said the IRS would focus on increased tax enforcement activity and large, super-wealthy corporations and not target households making less than $400,000 a year. “Specifically, I direct that no additional resources, including new staff or hired auditors, be used to increase the proportion of small businesses or households below the $400,000 threshold that are…

Social media? No. Blame cable news for idiot politics.
The last two election cycles have seen one burst of attention paid in “echo chambers” or communities where a narrow set of viewpoints makes people less likely to challenge their own views. Much of this concern has focused on the rise of social media, which it does radically transformed the information ecosystem. However, when scientists investigated the echo chambers of social media, they found surprisingly little evidence of them on a large scale, or at least towards a scale large enough to warrant growing concerns. And yet, selective exposure to the news increases polarization. This suggested that these studies lost…

To the editor: Behold the majesty and power of the nine unelected gods on America’s Olympus, the Supreme Court of the United States. Behold the power of transmutation, the magic that transformed Dred Scott, an enslaved human being, into an object, something to be exploited by his master for personal gain. The alchemists of old resent the legal rule of these pseudo-gods as they alter natural laws and create, through bribery, a living being from the dust called a corporate personality. These living deities don’t care that the 14th amendment was never decided in this person’s favor in 1887. The…

Why are you conservative? Or a libertarian, republican, democrat, socialist? OK, if you read my column, you’re probably not a socialist… But how do people come to such different conclusions? We like to think that our politics is shaped by rational analysis. We analyze what conservatives and liberals write, weigh their ideas, and draw conclusions based on facts and evidence. But it turns out there’s probably something else going on. I can predict your political party pretty accurately if I only know what you do for a living. Here’s why I say this: When you give money to a political…
