FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys’ negotiations with Dalton Schultz went nowhere. And now, at least through the 2022 season, the franchise-marked tight end isn’t going anywhere either.

After posting more than 800 receiving yards along with eight receiving touchdowns, the Cowboys scored with franchise running back Dalton Schultz. Schultz had a breakout season last year and is gaining more recognition.

But there has been no progress this week on long-term contract discussions. So even though owner Jerry Jones told us over 30 years ago, “Deadlines make deals” … all that’s happening now, contractually, is a look at the spring of 2023. ..

When the parties can dance again, Dallas has the option to re-tag Schultz, next time around $13 million.

All of this, the collection of highs and lows, comes to light after Schultz skipped a week of OTAs amid frustrations with contract negotiations (or lack thereof).

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, for example, empathizes somewhat with Schultz.

“I went through that process. A lot of people go through that process. I’m confident in this situation,” Prescott said. “Me and Schultz talk all the time, so I knew what was going on, the team does. We’ll handle it.”

The need to retain Schultz has increased, in the minds of some since the trade with Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper, leaving 104 attack targets vacant. Since future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten in 2013, Schultz is the first Cowboys tight end to record more than 800 yards and eight or more touchdowns in a season.

Conventional thinking: Dallas, with the July 15 deadline to end negotiations and the tag deal, hopes to sign Schultz long-term and make him an integral part of the offensive beyond 2022.

But as we’ve reported: The Cowboys may not really be focusing on that “hope,” preferring to let Schultz play on the tag, opting to revisit the idea of Schultz’s future next spring.
