Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi would not confirm which oversight entities, but stressed that the USSS is fully cooperating as multiple inquiries are ongoing.
The agency became the focus of a House Select Committee investigation on Jan. 6 after former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified in June during a public hearing. Hutchinson claimed then-President Donald Trump tried to force the Secret Service to bring him to the Capitol as Congress worked to certify the results of the 2020 election.
Multiple sources told CNN it’s an unusual step to provide Secret Service agents’ personal cell phone numbers to investigators.
CNN previously reported that the US Secret Service deleted text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021. The text messages in question may have been deleted when the agency performed a data migration from the phones which started on January 27, 2021.
Several oversight bodies, including the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, the National Archives and the House January committee, are investigating or requesting more information about the USSS text messages . It was not immediately clear if those officers’ personal cell phone numbers are related to those inquiries.
CNN recently reported that current USSS Director James Murray is delaying his retirement, underscoring the agency’s commitment to investigations, such as the January 6 investigation.
