Six Trinidadians, including a police officer, charged in connection with the attack on world javelin champion Anderson Peters

The president of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), Brian Lewis, has expressed his shock and dismay at the content of a video showing Grenada’s javelin world champion, Anderson Peters, being hit and thrown from ‘a ship Wednesday.

The incident, which has caused an uproar in the region, is still being investigated in his native Granada, where it occurred. The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) is expected to send a file to the country’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) shortly.

Details about the causes of the incident, however, are still unclear. However, the company at the center of the incident, Trinidad-based Harbor Tours Ltd, has also condemned the incident and promised an independent investigation.

On behalf of CANOC, Lewis spoke of feelings of disappointment at witnessing the incident and wished the athlete a speedy recovery.

“There are no words to adequately express my regret, disappointment and dismay at what was seen on video of an altercation between Grenada and Caribbean sports hero Anderson Peters,” Lewis said via statement.

“At CANOC we wish Anderson a speedy and full recovery. While the Grenada police conduct a full investigation to find out the facts about what happened,” he added.

“In the resolution and de-escalation of the conflict, acts of violence cannot be tolerated.

We trust that Anderson, with the support of his family, friends and the Granada Olympic Movement, will make a full recovery. There are lessons from this unfortunate situation that we can all learn from as we continue to guide and nurture and support our Caribbean athletes, youth and youth to fulfill their potential and aspirations.”
