Three people were shot and wounded Sunday evening in the parking lot of Six Flags Great America theme park in Gurnee, authorities and park officials said.
All three victims were hit by gunfire from a single vehicle that fled the scene, according to a statement from a park spokeswoman. Dozens of emergency vehicles responded after the shooting. Two of the victims were still being evaluated at an area hospital, while a third victim refused treatment, the statement said. Their ages and genders were not released.
Illinois State Police confirmed the shooting, saying they sent troopers to assist, but directed an additional investigation to Gurnee police and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Officials at those offices did not immediately return calls for comment.
The park closed early with guests and team members leaving under the direction of the Gurnee Police Department. Law enforcement is investigating.
The shooting comes as public fears of mass shootings remain high after the mass shooting at the Highland Park Fourth of July parade that left seven people dead and dozens more injured. Last weekend’s Bud Billiken parade in Bronzeville had an increased police presence following concerns expressed following the north suburban shooting that shocked the nation.
