Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said defensive and counter-offensive actions against Russian forces are underway in an apparent confirmation of the expected pullback of Putin’s troops.

Mr Zelensky said on Saturday that his top commanders were in a “positive” mindset as his troops engaged in heavy fighting at the front.

The Ukrainian leader, speaking at a press conference in Kiev alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, said: “Counteroffensive and defensive actions are being carried out in Ukraine. I will not talk about what stage or phase they are in “.

The comments come after an escalation of fighting in southern and eastern Ukraine.

Britain’s Ministry of Defense said today that Ukraine has “penetrated” the front line of Russian defenses in some areas and is making “good progress” in its counteroffensive.

Kiev has carried out “significant operations” over the past 48 hours in the south and east of the country, he added.

Ukraine “penetrates” the first line of Russian defenses in some areas

Ukraine has “penetrated” the front line of Russian defenses in some areas and is making “good progress” in its counteroffensive, Britain’s Ministry of Defense has said.

Kiev has carried out “significant operations” over the past 48 hours in the south and east of the country, he added.

“In some areas, Ukrainian forces have probably made good progress and penetrated the first line of Russian defenses,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“In others, Ukraine’s progress has been slower.” The Ministry of Defense added that Russia’s progress in the war has been “mixed”.

The collapse of Ukraine’s dam is both a rapid disaster and a slow ecological catastrophe

The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam was a quick disaster that is rapidly evolving into a long-term environmental catastrophe affecting drinking water, food supplies and ecosystems that reach the Black Sea.

The near-term dangers can be seen from outer space: tens of thousands of parcels of land flooded and more to come. Experts say the long-term consequences will be generational.

Zelensky confirms the counter-offensive is underway

President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Saturday that his military was engaged in “counter-offensive and defensive operations” a day after Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin said Kiev’s push to retake territory was underway.

But the Ukrainian leader did not reveal any details and told reporters to convey to Putin that his generals were optimistic.

Sporting his trademark khaki fatigues, Zelensky shrugged at a press conference when asked about Putin’s comments on Friday that Kiev had begun its counteroffensive but made no progress.

“Counter-offensive and defensive actions are being carried out in Ukraine, but I will not say in detail at what stage they are,” Zelensky said, listing Ukraine’s top military official by name.

“They (the generals) are all in a positive mood. Pass it on to Putin,” he said with a smile, standing alongside visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He said Putin’s comments about the counteroffensive were “interesting… It’s important for Russia to always feel this: that they have little time left, in my opinion.”
