HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A piece of a building on High Street in Holyoke suddenly fell to the sidewalk Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at around 9.30am and luckily no one was injured and no one was inside the building.
Officials were on the scene investigating the security of that building throughout the morning using drone technology. The High Street has since reopened after being closed to traffic for part of Tuesday morning.
Holyoke Public Works crews installed fencing around the building to ensure people do not walk under the deteriorating roof.
Holyoke Fire Capt. David Rex told Western Mass News that recent wet weather may be to blame.
“Unfortunately, with all this rain, the strange weather pattern we’ve had over the winter, it’s been a lot more water than anything. If the roof is not completely intact, that’s what we deal with,” Rex explained.
Those traveling along High Street are asked to obey the barrier in place and avoid walking under the building.
Western Mass News has a crew on the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.
