QUINCY, Mass – A backyard grill may have started a large fire Saturday that caused extensive damage to two homes, three cars and a garage on Sea Street in Quincy, a fire official said.
“The fire just took off,” Quincy Fire Capt. John Gillan told Boston 25 after the fire that broke out around 11:30 a.m. Saturday at 308 Sea St. from Quincy.
No injuries were reported.
Video obtained by Boston 25 shows a large plume of thick, black smoke emanating from the fire, which quickly spread to another home.
“It looks like the porch caught fire and then the fire went into the house and then three cars in the driveway, the garage and the house behind it, and then the propane tank exploded,” Gillan said.
Quincy Fire Chief Joe Jackson was attending a fire department function “around the corner” and immediately responded to the fire and took command, Gillan said.
Engine 6 was the first on the scene and firefighters knocked down the fire in about 30 minutes, Gillan said.
“We saw a huge volume of smoke from the whole city,” Gillan said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
