Supreme Court to hear pleas on Manipur violence today
The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a batch of petitions on the Manipur situation, including one by a BJP MLA challenging the high court’s order on the issue of Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community and a PIL of a tribal team for an SIT investigation. the violence that rocked the northeastern state last week. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narashima and JB Pardiwala is scheduled to hear the matter.
Clashes between Meiteis and tribals began last Wednesday in Churachandpur district. The tribals are opposing reservation to the Meiteis after the Manipur High Court’s March 27 order asked the state government to send a recommendation to the Center within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Meitei community. Dinganglung Gangmei, BJP MLA and chairman of the Hills Area Committee (HAC) of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, in his appeal claimed that the “proceedings before the High Court were vitiated by not converting the HAC in part” and the HC order created tension and led to violence between the two communities.
“Even if directions were given, they could not have been given without notice to the HAC and heard by the HAC,” said the MLA who challenged several orders, including contempt notices, of the ‘high court related to the issue.
Eknath Shinde will campaign for BJP in Karnataka today
Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde will campaign for the BJP for the May 10 Karnataka assembly elections. Shinde will be in the state on Monday and will participate in two BJP roadshows in Kapu and Udupi, party sources said.
Before reaching Udupi, Shinde will visit Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple. He will then meet the Dharmadhikari of the Dharmasthala temple, Veerendra Hegde, they said. The Prime Minister will also visit the Sri Krishna temple in Udupi and will return to Maharashtra on Monday itself, sources said.
