Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister Admiral Tin Aung San jointly inaugurated Myanmar’s Sittwe Port on Tuesday and received the first Indian cargo ship, an official statement said. The cargo vessel was flagged from the port of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Kolkata. With the development of Sittwe port, the cost and time of transporting goods between Kolkata and Agartala and Aizwal will decrease by 50 percent, the statement said. “This will promote trade connectivity and people-to-people ties between India and Myanmar and the wider region, and help boost the economic development of the North-Eastern states under the government’s Act East policy,” Sonowal said in the statement.
