On his Letter of May 15Rubio said the group “has mocked and degraded Christians, and especially Catholics, since its founding on Easter Sunday, 1979.”
“You think the Los Angeles Dodgers are being ‘inclusive and welcoming to all’ by giving an award to a group of gay and transgender drag performers who intentionally mock and demean Christians, and not just Christians, but nuns, who dedicate their lives? to serving others?” asked the senator.
The group of gay and transgender activists has held performances since 1979, when the AIDS epidemic began, and has been a scene of Republican and conservative protests and rallies ever since.
Former Biden administration official Sam Brinton, who was placed on leave from the Energy Department after being accused of steal luggageis a member of the drag organization that goes by the name “Sister Ray Dee O’Active,” according to The Telegraph.
Many of the group’s members, who also raise money for AIDS and LGBTQ causes, use names that mock the Catholic faith such as “Sister Selma Soul,” “Sister Guard N. O’Pansies” or “Sister Lourdes Mae Shepherd.”
The announcement that the group would receive an award sent shockwaves through social media, prompting backlash aimed at MLB and the Dodgers organization.
“The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI) are an anti-Catholic hate group that exists to desecrate and degrade the Catholic faith,” said Brian Burch, president of Catholic vote.
“It’s bad enough to drag down baseball, which should be synonymous with the best of America,” said Joshua Mercer, vice president of CatholicVote. “But the LA Dodgers, with Major League Baseball’s blessing, are doing more than polluting our national pastime with rabid bigotry and far-left propaganda: They’re directly attacking religious Americans.”
“Because it is @MLB in honor of an anti-Catholic hate group?” asked Ryan T. Anderson, president of the Center for Ethics and Public Policy in Washington, DC
“Bravo to the senator @MarcoRubio to hold the@MLBDodgers to account for their disgusting political embrace of anti-Catholic bigotry,” said Catholic University professor Chad Pecknold. he tweeted.
CatholicVote’s Burch issued a statement on Twitter after the Dodgers’ announcement Wednesday.
