Oh no, here we go again. It was probably the first thing you thought when you saw Jacob deGrom leave last night’s start with an injury. He was pitching very well as he went hitless through four innings of work with five strikeouts before being pulled from the game on what is being called a “precautionary decision.”

However, given his recent injury history, anything with deGrom feels scary. What does this mean for the best pitcher in baseball?

Jacob deGrom injury update

For now, it seems we don’t have much to worry about. For starters, it’s been classified as a wrist problem, which is much better than any kind of arm problem. He’ll be re-evaluated today and we should have a clearer picture, but here’s what deGrom had to say about it: “I felt it warm up a little bit. I thought it was going to loosen up and it actually did it tightened up a little bit. a little bit as the game went on. we’re playing smart. could have continued? probably. but it lingered and got a little worse as the game went on. just want to play it safe . We’ve got a long season ahead of us. Honestly, I’m not too worried. I’d like to think I’ll make my next [start]but we’ll see how he is tomorrow.” In other words, it doesn’t seem like a serious problem and deGrom isn’t too worried about it, which is a good thing, of course. His manager isn’t too worried either, “Right now, I I feel pretty good.” Bruce Bouchy (Rangers Manager) said after the game. On the face of it, it’s all good news and that’s all we have to do right now. He didn’t quit in the middle of the inning wincing or nothing for him, so right now we have to be optimistic about it.

The Rangers ace has been fantastic so far. He was hit for five runs in his Texas Rangers debut, but has since given up just three runs in 17 innings (1.59 ERA in that span) and has a 0.87 WHIP on the season with 32 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work. If he were to miss time, it would be a huge blow to fantasy teams and the Rangers, but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the case. I wouldn’t be surprised if his next outing was shortened (which is a bummer given that he was slated to face the A’s), but overall we have to be positive about this situation. If the worst case scenario is a short IL period of 15 days, that wouldn’t be the end of the world. For now, fantasy managers can take a deep breath and not panic, but stay tuned for any updates headed our way sometime during the day.
