URBANA — A Champaign man remained in the county jail Thursday after being arrested at a stranger’s home Tuesday.

A Champaign police report said a neighbor reported a man had climbed through a window of a home in the 700 block of South Randolph Street around 7 p.m.

Police found Marco A. Lara-Schriever, 26, who listed an address in the 400 block of West Vine Street, inside the apartment with one of his palms bleeding from a cut.

Lara-Schriever told the officer that she had the tenant’s permission to be there, but police confirmed that the person whose name she gave never lived there and that the current tenant did not know him.

The neighbor who alerted authorities gave police a video of himself entering the apartment with a gray backpack. In the backpack, the police found items that according to the resident belonged to her.

Judge Ben Dyer set bail for Lara-Schriever at $50,000 and told her to return to court on June 14.

Court records show the first offender was given probation in 2020 for possession of a controlled substance and had another conviction for violating a protection order.

If convicted of burglary, he faces a mandatory four to 15 years in prison.
