The Republican congressman from Utah is expected to announce his exit from the House of Representatives soon, multiple sources told The Salt Lake Tribune.
U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign his seat in Congress, possibly as soon as this week.
Multiple sources have confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune that Stewart announced his plan to step down, citing ongoing health issues with his wife. It was unclear what those health problems might be.
First elected by Utahns in 2012, Stewart is serving his sixth term in Congress. In 2022, he won re-election over Democrat Nick Mitchell by more than 30 percentage points.
Stewart will be the second member of Utah’s congressional delegation to resign mid-term in the past six years. Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz resigned his congressional seat in 2017 become a pundit on Fox News Channel.
Choosing a replacement for the remainder of Stewart’s term will require a special election. Once Stewart officially announces his resignation, Gov. Spencer Cox has seven days to set the schedule for the primary and special elections.
Stewart’s congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This is breaking news and will be updated throughout the day.
