NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Authorities announced an arrest in the killing of Sayreville, New Jersey Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour.
Dwumfour was gunned down while sitting in her car outside her home on February 1. He was a member of the Sayreville City Council.
The killing shocked many, not just in New Jersey, but across the country.
Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Rashid Ali Bynum. The prosecutor said he was arrested Tuesday in Virginia and charged in connection with Dwumfour’s murder.
The Republican councilwoman was shot and killed in her SUV four months ago this week right outside her home in the Parlin section of Sayreville.
Witnesses said that after he was shot, his SUV rolled down the street in the housing estate.
The prosecutor did not release a motive for the killing, but said the suspect was located through devices and his car was captured on surveillance video.
Authorities said the two knew each other through the Church Fire Congress Fellowship.
Bynum is charged with first degree murder and gun possession. He is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
Born to Ghanaian parents, Dwumfour graduated from William Paterson University in 2017. Four years later, she became the first black person elected to a Sayreville council seat.
In March, the family met with police, but ended up with more questions than answers.
