F-16s scramble to investigate plane that eventually crashed — officials

MONTEBELLO, Va. (WABC) — A small plane bound for Long Island crashed in Virginia, causing the fighter jets to crash.

The FAA says the Cessna Citation crashed into mountainous terrain near Montebello, Virginia, around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The plane was bound for MacArthur Airport in Islip.

Authorities say they were concerned about the plane because it was flying an unusual flight path over the DC area. Officials say the F-16s were scrambled to investigate and saw that the plane’s pilot had passed out.

Virginia State Police and other rescue officials arrived at the scene of the crash around 8:00 p.m. Sunday. No survivors were located.

The occupants of the plane have not yet been identified.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash.
