MEDFORD, Mass. – Commuters are facing long delays on Interstate 93 near the Medford-Somerville line Tuesday morning amid an investigation into a fatal crash, officials said.
The right travel lanes are closed on the southbound side of the freeway at Exit 21 at Route 38/Mystic Avenue while investigators investigate the scene of a fatal crash, according to MassDOT.
“Drivers traveling southbound in Boston should anticipate significant impacts and delays during the morning commute, consider traveling at a different time or route, or consider using public transit options, such as the MBTA Orange Line or MBTA Commuter Rail for Boston trips,” MassDOT. he said in a statement.
The video showed heavy traffic leading to the scene, where many police vehicles and road crews were working. Boston 25’s Catherine Parrotta reported delays of more than 80 minutes before the box.
MassDOT has deployed regional message boards on highways, including near the New Hampshire border, to alert drivers of lane closures.
It is not clear when the freeway will be fully reopened to traffic.
No additional details were immediately available.
An investigation remains ongoing.
