COLORADO SPRINGS — Record rainfall in our area may help with drought-related conditions, but it can make construction efforts painful. A local business owner says this weather is killing his business.
“A little rain is great, but this rain every day really hurts us,” said Jim Morley, owner of Morley Construction.
Morley Construction focuses on developing lots for home builders. Its owner says it has been nearly impossible to meet construction deadlines.
“We’ve been trying to put in power lines, and we’ve spent weeks. The power company is ready to go, and we’re ready to go. They dig a ditch, we dig a ditch and it fills up. with water,” Morley said.
He went on to talk about the economic impact this has on his business. Rain can often undo any progress made by businesses, erasing hard work.
“As a result, it ends up costing us a significant amount of money because the guys who do it for us expect to get paid to do it, and if they have to do it 2, 3 or 4 times, they still expect to get paid.”
Morley went on to say that not meeting these key construction deadlines makes moving to Colorado Springs difficult.
“Homebuyers are scheduled to move in on July 1st, guess what? Now it’s August 15th. Well, that hurts them wherever they live, if they’re selling a house, they’re staying in a hotel. It hurts the home builder because now the builder cannot deliver the house on time.”
In the meantime, these companies have nothing to do but wait for dry weather.
