Father Johan Verschueren, SJ, Rupnik’s superior, whose name was found in the statement, said no further comments would be made until this period had concluded.

In February, the Jesuits said they had opened new internal proceedings against Rupnik after receiving allegations against him dating from 1985 to 2018. The “highly credible” allegations, they said, included allegations of spiritual, psychological and sexual, and abuse of conscience.

The latest statement said the team investigating the allegations handed over its dossier the same month.

Rupnik’s superiors imposed certain restrictions on his ministry at the recommendation of the investigators.

The restrictions, according to the Society of Jesus, were “changing communities and accepting a new mission in which we offered him one last chance as a Jesuit to accept his past and give a clear signal to the many wounded who were testifying against him to enter on the path of truth”.

According to media reports in recent months, Rupnik defied these and other orders, including to remain in central Italy and not to participate in public artistic activities.
