At least 20 people were shot, one of them dead, early Sunday at a rally in a suburban Chicago parking lot, authorities said.
Television news video showed the mall lot littered with debris and police tape in Willowbrook, about 20 miles (32.1 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
“There were at least 20 people shot. One victim has died,” said DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Eric Swanson. “The reason for this incident is unclear. … We transported numerous victims from the scene. Others only entered area hospitals.”
The conditions of the injured were not immediately available, Swanson told reporters.
“It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration. We just started hearing gunshots, so we fell down until they stopped,” testified Markeshia Avery. he told WLS-TV.
Another witness, Craig Lotcie, said: “Everybody ran, and it was chaos.”
