A small plane crashed into Lake Michigan near Beaver Island Friday morning, officials confirmed, killing one person.
The US Coast Guard’s 9th District, which covers all of the Great Lakes, says they were notified of a plane crash and were able to get to the scene quickly because they were conducting training exercises in the area.
When the Coast Guard arrived, they found a debris field and a person in the water. That person was taken to a local hospital with injuries that included lacerations to the head.
A second person had gone on the plane and the Coast Guard called divers from the Charlevoix Sheriff’s Department. One person was found on the plane and was unresponsive.
The authorities say that the exact time of the plane crash is unknown at the moment. The cause of the accident is still unknown.
