Boston: A recent outbreak of Covid-19 among staff and patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has officials closely monitoring those cases, the hospital announced Saturday.

Universal masking has been implemented in the affected unit, hospital officials said in a statement.

“BIDMC recently detected a cluster of cases of COVID-19 among staff and patients. We quickly isolated the patients and then initiated universal masking in the affected unit in accordance with infection control protocols,” says the statement. “We continue to monitor this situation closely and will adjust this plan in the future as necessary, and have notified the cluster to the Department of Public Health and the Boston Public Health Commission.”

Major hospitals lifted their mask mandates in May after the end of the Covid-19 health emergency.

This uprising came after the federal and state public health emergency for COVID-19 ended on May 11.

In April, a group of local doctors called on Gov. Maura Healey to maintain mandatory mask requirements.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
