to the editor,
– Performative politics is destroying our communities.
Check the news any day of the week and you’ll see several articles about non-issues that elected officials turn into issues. The most recent came in the form of a public discussion about bathroom and locker room use at TUSD brought to us by Moms for “Liberty,” supported by TUSD Trustee Jennifer Grinager. There was 2.5 hours of unnecessary explosive public comment followed by a legal presentation letting everyone know that the law states that students can use the bathroom or lockers that correspond to their gender identity.
PRJUSD Councilman Kenney Enney is using the same tactic right now of going to conservative social media groups and pestering people before Tuesday’s PRJUSD school board meeting so he can change the flag policy. Presumably, he wants to encourage people to discuss the board and community members with whom they disagree and demand the removal of the Pride flag or the inclusion of any number of politically aligned conservative flags. The one she used in her post is a pro-life flag with pink and blue baby feet.
Can we please stop this performative political nonsense?
These distractions take us away from the important issues we face. Can we please focus on real issues like academics, transportation, discipline, and yes, where will the largest elementary school in our district be located?
Intentionally dividing the community by creating problems where none should exist is a great way to destroy public education. It’s one of the reasons parents pull their kids out of our public schools…and who could blame them?
Focus on real issues. Stop targeting LGBTQ+ kids. If some teachers want students to know that they are a safe person with a rainbow flag, they can save a life. Let them.
